My father was an avid a photographer. He had a small Minox camera (the spy camera) that he took everywhere. This picture was taken of me taking a drink of water at a fountain. It was 1964 – I was 6 years old. It was taken at a small zoo called Jungle Land which was located in Thousand Oaks CA. At that time, it was pretty rural. Jungle Land closed in 1969 due to competition and also the surrounding landscape changing with housing developments. I used very little color in this work to help accentuate a vintage feel. The subtle pink of the sweater pops a bit to bring it out and add presence.
This piece hung in our home in Los Angeles and then also Laguna Beach. When we moved to NYC we couldn’t take this with us.
We live in a small apartment and don’t have the wall space like we did in CA.
They have been in storage in Orange County and we decided last month that we would rather have them out in the world for people to enjoy them .
