The Noirs and Westerns
I have been painting 2 series based on movies from the 1930’s to the 1960s. When I paint my still lifes, I’d watch Turner Classic Movies on TV, and found the films to be fascinating from a compositional point of view. The idea for both series occurred to me at once, and I could see the finished work in my mind. I recorded several films, and using the DVR, froze the image I wanted. I then take a photograph of the television, print out the photo, and work from that.
I came up for the idea for the Film Noirs while driving – each piece had to be a black and white image with a 3 word title – that’s how the Film Noir art show “Here’s Comes Trouble” came about.
The Film Noir movies are very tension filled and have a surprising number of women committing violence. People are violent and it can seem campy, but also shocking to see how it was being depicted in the 1930’s and 40’s. I appreciate the lack of gore in these films, they get the point across without much blood.

The Western series is called “See The Pony”. They all have a blue sky, a horse, and are entirely painted in vertical strokes. This was a real departure for me, as I’ve never considered myself a landscape or animal painter. The name comes from the moment a child holds up an indecipherable drawing, and as one is about to complement the drawing of an elephant, the child says “See the Pony?”.
